Heron

One of the four specialist Carp lakes a beautiful mature tree and shrub lined lake with lots of lily beds to fish to. Flat spacious swims, plenty of room for bivvys.

Each swim is individual with out of bounds areas on opposite banks to avoid any over casting etc. The lake has a silty/clay bottom, about 7 Acres in size and runs from around 3 foot deep to around 6 foot deep in areas.

This would be classed as a medium difficulty Carp water with a large head of carp including mirrors, commons, Ghosties and Grassies to over 30lb. The current lake record is 38 lb 12 oz.

Heron Lake Swims

  •
  • 1. Bailiffs
Although named bailiffs swim, it is free for anyone to fish. A close range swim with the main spots being the overhanging willow tree in the left corner and the island to the right
  • 2. The Cut
Another close range swim, the best spots to try are usually the channels between the lily’s and the two islands (Average depth 4ft)
  • 3. Sunset
The main feature is the large lily bed. A rod in the channel between the island and the lily’s is a good spot. Also don’t ignore the open water area to the right of the swim (average depth 4ft)
  • 4. The Bay
A sheltered Carpy corner, the two main areas to target are the lily’s to the left and the far margin. Slightly deeper this end average 5 to 6 foot.
  • 5. Snags
As the name suggests there is a snag to your right which is a sunken island which is marked with a white post and lily’s. Fish love to patrol around this and bask on top of this area.
There is also a lily bed to your left and the far margin which produces plenty of fish (Average depth 5 foot)
  • 6. Rocky’s
This swim has the sunken island snag to the left. The main feature is the far margin, especially the overhanging willow on the corner as well as the open water area which is a crossroads for fish traveling into the bay and the thinner arm of the lake (Av depth 5ft)
  • 7. 3 Ways
This swim has plenty of areas to fish. You have 2 islands and a far margin to target. It is also big enough to fish as a double swim (Av depth 5ft)
  • 8. Hideaway
A small close range swim which is often neglected by anglers, but as it is a quiet corner fish do often visit in numbers. The channel between the island and margin produces plenty of fish.
  • 9. The Bridge
The first swim you come to up the middle spit, you have an overhanging willow in the corner as well as a far margin. Fish do move through under the bridge to your left when travelling to and from the main body of the lake. (Av depth 4ft)
  • 10. Conifers
The main feature in this swim is the overhanging bushes and large conifer on the far margin. A bait in the near margins can also produce (Av depth 4ft)

  • 15. The Gulley
The old river bed used to run about 3 rod lengths of the way across. Although now silted up this spot will still produce fish. The far margin lily beds always hold fish, keep your eye on the water as if mid water starts to show fish or bubbling then get a bait on it. (Av depth 3-4 ft)
  • 16. The Alamo
Similar to the gulley the main feature is the lily’s on the far margin, and again if fish are showing mid water its worth casting a bait to them. (Av depth 3-4 ft)
  • 17. The Point
Along with ‘The Monk’ one of the most popular swims on the lake. This swim commands the central section of the lake with plenty of great spots to try. Main areas are the lily’s to your right and the overhanging willow and bay on the far margin. (av depth 4ft)
  • 18. Kingfishers

Lots of features to try including lily’s and a far margin. There is also a shallow bay to your left that can hold plenty of fish in warm weather. (Av depth 4ft)
  • 20. Car Park
As well as being close to the car park it is packed with features. Various lily beds and the far margin with bridge that cuts through to the thin arm of the lake. Best bet on rod half way to the lily pad line and the other to the far margin. (Av depth 4ft)
